Lucero hit a layup when Rivero fired a big triple as UP responded to every return of Adamson from that point. But the Falcons dug a final fight as Ahmed Hanapi drove hard to 73-71 with a three and Joshua Yero with 31.4 seconds left.
The Falcons then tightened their defense, taking the ball into the corner where Rivero missed a triple that gave Adamson the final shot of the win.
But Jerome Lastimosa, whose offense and playmaking kept the Falcons at bay for most of the game, picked up a three-pointer that completely missed the rim as time went on.
Lucero finished to lead UP with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, nine of just 13 shots off the field. Diouf added 16 points, 15 rebounds and three steals while Giles Pilipinus cadet Carl Tamayo added 11 points, 10 points for Rivero’s Maroons.
Lastimosa finished with 18 points but needed 22 shots to get there as he led a Falcon crew that got off to a strong start and had several double-digit leads in the first half. Lenda Duanga added 16 points and 14 rebounds for Adamson, who took 16 points from Keith Jaldivar.
