UAAP: Atenio beat rivals La Salle 4-0

MANILA, Philippines – Angie Coume led Atenio to a second-half lead to put La Salle 74-57 and remain the only unbeaten team in the UAAP Season 84 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

In their first competitive game with the Green Archers in this pandemic, the Cowboys were almost unbeatable with double-double 16 points and 19 rebounds, including two blocks, to keep the Blue Eagles unbeaten in four games.

The Gilas Pilipinas Naturalized Center capped Atenio’s 16-4 in the third quarter, turning a one-point lead into a 58-45 spread to the final frame, where the Cowboys maintained their influence inside to push their lead to 69. 2:37 52 including the rest

Transfer Dave Ildefenso also played a key role with 12 points, five rebounds and two assists, while Jian Mamuak made an opening in the clash with the country’s toughest opponents, scoring 11 points and showing a great defense with six stills and six rebounds.

“Tough game. It was a game where it wasn’t comfortable in the end. We just held on and in the fourth we rebounded the ball better. The defense was tough for the whole game but we’re not rebounding the ball. It didn’t look so good.” Says Atenio coach Tab Baldwin.

“In the fourth quarter, we got much better and both teams played well. We have risen to the top, tickling death.

La Salle absorbed the first defeat of the season, falling 3-1 for second place.

Michael Phillips led the Green Archers with nine of his 13 points in the second quarter and grabbed 10 rebounds in his first Atenio-La Salle game.

Mark Nunn finished with 12 points but was limited to 3 out of 10 to go with three rebounds and two assists. Evan Nelle added 10 points, while Justin Baltzer, who is coming from 20-point and 11-rebound performances, caught just five points in 2-of-10 shooting but had 12 rebounds.
